1. Seeding with Aeration

Late Winter/Early Spring

Our ultimate goal on your property is to thicken it up and improve the varieties of grass that comprise your lawn. Core aeration gives us a perfect chance to do exactly this.

Since grass seed needs direct contact with the soil, aeration gives us a unique opportunity to strengthen the lawn by allowing a huge number of places to get new seed down. After aeration, we can broadcast new grass seed throughout the thinner areas. The seed falls down into the plug hole, and soaks up the water that settles in with it. Before you know it, new grass plants are growing out of the aeration holes, and spreading to fill in the rest of the surrounding area.

Summary

While we have gone over many of the benefits of aeration here, we wanted to take a minute to summarize.

  1. Allows air into the root zone to better supply oxygen to the plants.
  2. Reduces thatch, which then reduces disease and insect problems.
  3. Reduces compaction, which allows the roots to grow deeper and stronger.
  4. Allows you to introduce new seed varieties into the lawn to strengthen it for the future.

Core Aeration

If you’ve seen a farmer plow a field, then you’ve seen aeration in action. In short, “aeration” is the act of getting air down into the soil. Farmers figured out many centuries ago that loosening the soil and getting more air down to the root zone would greatly benefit the crops. This simple truth has not changed; farmers still plow the fields every year before planting the crop. Your lawn is not much different than a farmer’s crop. It is a large number of plants growing in a prepared soil base. We don’t plow the grass because we would cause enough damage to need complete reseeding. Instead, we use a core aerator, which has a similar effect with far, far less damage.

2. Thatch Reduction

Late Winter/Early Spring

Between the crown of the grass plant and the soil lies a thatch layer. This is basically the dead and/or dying parts of the plant (not the clippings though). This layer will progressively get thicker and thicker until it no longer allows nutrients and water through to the root zone. It also makes a perfect home for insects and disease-causing fungi. Core aeration will punch holes through the thatch to allow water and nutrients through. It will also help speed up decomposition of this thatch layer by bringing soil microbes to the surface (in the plugs).

Lawns that are core aerated each year do not experience problems with thatch. It’s really that simple.

3. Soil Compaction

Late Spring/Early Summer

Soil that is hard and packed together will not allow roots to grow well, and will cause the plants to suffer. The test tubes on the bottom clearly demonstrate this fact. The one on the far right was tightly compacted. The one to the far left was left looser. You can see much deeper root growth and much healthier leaf growth in the lesser compacted soils. The grass in the heavily compacted tube is struggling simply to survive. Foot traffic, lawn mowers, and anything else that presses down on your grass will gradually increase the soil compaction. Core aeration alleviates this problem. The openings created by the cores allow for nearby soil to loosen up and fill in the holes.

4. Topsoil / Compost

Early Summer/Mid Summer

Benefits of Topdressing

Topdressing helps reduce the accumulation of unwanted material, and creates new pockets for air and water- especially when performed with core aeration. Topdressing quickens the decomposition of thatch buildup and, therefore, reverses its negative effects. In addition to controlling thatch, topdressing helps to level the surface of your lawn, and improve drainage. Continual applications of topdressing will help to lessen problems related to acidic, compacted clays.

5. Power Raking and Dethatching

Mid Summer/Late Summer

With Power Raking the machines raking tines are generally set lower so that they dig into the soil to ensure they pull up all the stubborn moss which can resemble a carpet and be up to 3 inches thick.

Core – Aeration

Aeration of your Lawn loosens soil and gets air down to the root zone, which provides many benefits to the grass. Using a core Aerator has a similar effect to farmers plowing their fields without the damage to your Grass that plowing would cause.

6. Fertilizer & Weed Care

Late Summer/Early Fall

Fertilization keeps lawns healthy and promotes that desired green color. The right time and the right amount of fertilization are important factors to keep in mind.

7. Tick / Mosquito
